Bartholomäus Ringwaldt (Hymn-Writer, Composer)

Born: November 28, 1532 (or 1530) - Frankfurt an der Oder, Brandenburg, Germany
Died: 1599 - Langfeld (near Sonnenburg), Brandenburg, Germany

Bartholomäus Ringwaldt [Ringwald] was ordained in 1557, and was pastor of two parishes before settling in 1566 as pastor of Langfeld in the province of Neumark.

Ringwaldt was one of the most prolific hymnists of the 16th Century, writing at least 165 hymns. A selection of 59 of his Geistliche Lieder was published at Halle, Germany, in 1858. He was known for his intrepid sermons on penance and in support of high morals. There are some important chorale texts by him still in use today which include, in addition to the presently mentioned one, Es ist gewißlich an der Zeit and Lobet den Herrn, und dankt ihm seine Gaben.
