Matthias Sojka was born the son of Wenzel Sojka. He was Kapellmeister (also organist, keyboard player and violinist) in the Kapelle of Grafen Johann Wenzel Millesimo in Vilémov.
The fact that Matthias Sojka was J.S. Bach's pupil, as first emphatically claimed by Seyfried in 1838 and subsequently by Laurencin (1864) and Löffler (1929/1931, 1940/1948, 1953), was refuted by Culka in 1960. Even with a view to the date of birth, this seems impossible, and an allegedly missing letter of recommendation from J.S. Bach for ten-year-old M. Sojka has certainly never existed. In fact, it is likely that the names Bach and Zach were mixed up - the Bohemian organist and composer Jan Zach was the actual teacher of Sojka.
