Makoto Akatsu (Violin)

Born: January 17, 1963 - Nakano, Japan

The Japanese violinist, Makoto Akatsu, studied with Akira Morioka at the Kunitachi Music College in Tokyo (Class of 1984). At the same time, studied Baroque violin with Mari Ono, chamber music and viola da gambe with Shige Sennari. Alongside his studies, he conducted several choirs and orchestra. In 1987, he started Baroque violin studies with Sigiswald Kuijken st the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.

In 1990, Makoto Akatsu founded the orchestra Van Wasseraner with which he has performed on numerous occasions. In 1993 he obtained his soloist's diploma. He won 2nd prize (with Affetti Musicali) in the 1991 International Early Music Ensemble Competition in Utrecht, and he was playing and leading at several important international groups: La Petite Bande (Director: Sigiswald Kuijken), Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra (Director: Jeanne Lamon), Les Arts Florissants (Director: William Christie), Nederlandse Bachvereniging (Director: Jos van Veldhoven / Shunske Sato), Concerto Currende (Director: Erik Van Nevel), Bach Collegium Japan (Director: Masaaki Suzuki) and more.

Makoto Akatsu started to teach at LUCA Campus Lemmens Leuven (Belgium) since October 2010 as a Guest professor of Baroque violin and viola. Also, he is active for teaching in Japan, as well as chamber music performances. He Director of vocal ensemble Atonalité Choeur and of the vocal and instrumental ensemble Niigata Bach Soloists (founded in 2025). He currently lives in The Hague, the Netherlands.
