Howard Arman (Conductor)

Born: 1954 - London, England

The English conductor, Howard Arman, studied at Trinity College of Music. After working with leading ensembles in England he went on to appear all over Europe and at festivals in Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Edinburgh, Athens, Utrecht and Brügge, as well as in Jerusalem and in Athens.

Howard Arman has lived in Germany and Austria since 1981. He was the main director of the "Festwochen der Alten Musik" in Innsbruck. In Germany he has conducted the Radio Choirs of the NDR Hamburg, SWF Stuttgart and RIAS-Kammerchor Berlin, in Austria the ORF Choir in Vienna. In May 1998 he became conductor of the MDR Radio Choir Leipzig and its artistic director.

With the Salzburger Bachchoir, a very important choir in Austria and abroad founded by Howard Arman in 1983, he made over 100 performances and recordings of choir and orchestra works from Baroque up to the music of the 20th century. He continued to lead them until 2000. The Innsbrucker Capellknaben was founded by him in 1991. In Italy he had many concerts and recordings in cooperation with the composer Hans Werner Henze at Festivals in Rome and Montepulciano. In 1991 he had his debut in the Wiener Musikverein. In 1995 he conducted the opening cermony of the Salzburg's Festival. Since his debut in Salzburg he has performances at the Salzburg-Festival regularly. For example with George Frideric Handel's Israel in Egypt. In 1996-1997 he conducted concerts with the Essener Philharmoniker, the Mozarteum Orchester, the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, the Symphony Orchestra of Tyrol and the orchestra of the opera house Halle an der Saale. He conducted concerts in Portugal, Greece, Italy and Japan.

The opera represents a particular interest of Howard Arman, he conducts many productions at opera houses throughout Germany (Komische Oper Berlin, Aalto Theater Essen, Opernhaus Halle/Saale, Potsdam, Bad Kissingen, Dessau, Goethe-Theater Bad Lauchstädt), Italy (La Fenice Venedig, Merano, Bolzano) and Austria (Landestheater Salzburg, Tiroler Landestheater). He was awarded the Händel Preis of Halle an der Saale in 1996 because of his performances with the orchestra of the opera-house of Halle which plays on historical instruments. Following his re-formation of the Handel Festival Orchestra on historical instruments for G.F. Handel's Orlando he was awarded, in 1998, the International Händel Prize. At the Volksoper in Vienna he also conducts operetta. including a recent new production of Offenbach´s Bluebeard. Since his appointment in Leipzig he has introduced an unusually wide-ranging repertoire, including orchestral, operatic, Baroque and a-capella works. Last season he conducted The Morning Heroies Symphony by A. Bliss, the oratorio Belshazzar´s Feast by William Walton and several performances of J. Haydn´s oratorio The Creation.

Howard Arman holds a professorship at the University of Music, and at the Mozarteum Salzburg.

Howard Arman's CD recordings have been made for Harmonia Mundi, EMI, Berlin Classics, Capriccio, Koch International, NCA, Ambitus Hamburg.
