Dmitri Bashkirov (Piano)

Born: November 1, 1931 - Tiblisi, Georgia (formerly in USSR)
Died: March 7, 2021 - Madrid, Spain

The Russian (actually Gerorgian) pianist and piano teacher, Dmitri [Dmitry, Dimitri] Bashkirov (Russian: Дмитрий Александрович Башкиров), studied in Tiblisi, Georgia with Anastasia Wirsaladze; then at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory with distinguished Russian pedagogue, Professor A Alexander Goldenweiser. Bashkirov’s name has been known to the public since 1955 when he received the Grand Prix at the Marguerite Long Competition in Paris.

Following his Paris success, Dmitri Bashkirov played with numerous international famous orchestras including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Wiener Symphoniker, St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris and Gewandhausorchester Leipzig under conductors such as sir John Barbirolli, Kurt Masur, Wolfgang Sawallisch, George Szell, Igor Markevitch, Evgueny Svetlanov, Kurt Sanderling, Zubin Mehta, Carlo Zecchi, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Daniel Barenboim. He played with the Borodin Quartet in Vienna, Dubrovnik, Helsinki, la Roque D’Anthelon, Toulouse, Bolonia, Santander, Berlin Festivals, Verbier,

In additional to his career as a pianist, Dmitri Bashkirov was Professor at the Moscow Conservatory, Titular Professor at the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia in Madrid and a professor at the International Piano Foundation in Griante/Cadenabbia at Lake Como, Italy. He gave master-classes at the Paris Conservatoire Superior, Oberlin College (USA), John Gilmore Festival (USA), Mozarteum in Salzburg, Helsinki Sibelius Academy, Santander Festival; in Vienna, Jerusalem, Budapest, Colmar, Lisbon, Belgrade, Turku, Los Angeles, Stockholm and others. Among his pupils or pianist who attended his master-classes are Dmitri Alexeev, Nicholas Angelich, Boris Bloch, Nikolai Demidenko, David Fray, Kirill Gerstein, Jonatan Gilad, Hélène Grimaud, David Kadouch, Jenny Lin, Vahan Mardirossian, Jura Margulis, Dudana Mazmanishvili, Eldar Nebolsin, Cédric Pescia, Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro, Peter Rösel, Edna Stern, Magnus Svensson, Dang Thai Son, Arcadi Volodos, and many others; they became prize winners of numerous famous competitions. Bashkirov was one of the members of the Jury in Leeds, Paris (M. Long), Santander (P. O’Shea), Arthur Rubinstein (Tel Aviv), Cleveland, Clara Schumann (Düsseldorf), Enescu (Bucharest), R. Schumann (Zwickau), F. Busoni (Bolzano), S. Rachmaninoff (Los Angeles), Minneapolis (USA) and others.

Dmitri Bashkirov was named Honorary People’s Artist of Russia in 1968 and a People's Artist of the RSFSR in 1990. He won the special Robert Schumann medal in Zwickau, as well as the Honorary Medal of the Autonomous University in Madrid, Honorary Prize “Ruks pianister festival”.

Dmitri Bashkirov recorded with the labels Erato, Melodiya, EMI, Russian CD and Harmonia Mundi.
