The English conductor, David Peter Bates, is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London and of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, and initially embarked on a professional singing career.
Inspired by his work with renowned conductors including Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Marc Minkowski, Andrea Marcon and Nicholas McGegan, and driven by a desire to articulate his own musical vision, David Bates founded La Nuova Musica. The success of La Nuova Musica has marked out him as one of Europe’s most exciting directors of Baroque music and as a figurehead for a new performing generation.
David Bates’s love of Baroque opera has led him to direct several productions over the past three years: George Frideric Handel’s Xerxes at Iford Arts, Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo at Kings Place, Cesti’s L’Orontea at the Innsbrucker Festwochen (Austria), Cavalli’s La Calisto at Cincinnati Opera (USA), and Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride at the Teatro São Carlos (Portugal).
Concert performances of opera have most recently included: G.F. Handel’s Berenice at the Internationale Händel-Festspiele Göttingen, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas with Dame Ann Murray in the Brighton international Festival, Issipile Conti at Wigmore Hall.
David Bates relishes his work in France as musical assistant and chorus master to Emmanuelle Haïm - most recently working at the Festival d’Aix en Provence and Opera de Paris. He recently directed the Chœur de Chambre Accentus on a national tour in a programme of English Romantic choral repertoire.
Future projects will include G.F. Handel’s Il Trionfo del Tempo at the opera houses in Caen and Lille, Antonio Vivaldi’s Il Farnace at the Spoleto Festival USA, G.F. Handel’s Alcina at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées, W.A. Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte at Opera Lille, and Rodelinda at Teatro Real, Madrid. |
