The Casiro Choral Society was established 1983 by Larry P Catlin in order to study and the perform great choral works. They operate under the umbrella of the American University in Cairo (AUC) and its Performing and Visual Arts Department and are supported by the All Saints' Cathedral in Zamalek, where they perform. The Choir has been a feature of Cairo's cultural scene for more than 30 years. Their staple is the classical standards of the Western repertoire, though we cover a lot of other territory as well. They generally have two major concerts each year, one in May and one in December and are currently conducted by John Baboukis.
Over the past five years John Baboukis has conducted the Choir (together with the Cairo Festival Orchestra, a professional ensemble) in performances of major works in the western choral repertorire, including George Frideric Handel's Messiah, Haydn’s Creation and Mass in Time of War, Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah, Johannes Brahms' German Requiem and Schicksalslied, L.v. Beethoven's Mass in C and Choral Fantasy, W.A. Mozart's Requiem, Igor Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms and J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243). |
