Cantus Firmus Ensemble (Vocal & Instrumental Ensemble)

Founded: Spring 2001 - Solothurn, Canton of Solothurn, Switzerland

Portrait

Cantus Firmus, founded by Andreas Reize in spring 2001, consists of a vocal ensemble with young professional musicians, the Cantus Firmus Consort, which plays instruments of old scale, and the Cantus Firmus Kammerchor. The repertoire of the ensemble ranges from the Baroque as a focus to the early Romantic period. Since its inception, Cantus Firmus has established itself among the best ensembles for early music in Switzerland and has earned an excellent reputation among audiences and critics alike.

Cantus Firmus has performed a cappella concerts, passions, cantatas, symphony concerts and own opera productions at Schloss Waldegg with great success. Invitations to the Internationalen Sommerakademie für Alte Musik Innsbruck, Migros-Klubhauskonzerten and the Bachwochen Amsoldingen followed. The recording of Le devin du village by Jean-Jacques Rousseau was released by the German label CPO and was rated as excellent by various international magazines. In 2011 CPO recorded George Frideric Handel's Apollo e Dafne.

The musicians have already gained their experience in numerous renowned ensembles for early music. They form an international group that has been dealing with questions of historical performance practice for a long time. The core cast of the Cantus Firmus Consort consists of a string formation with a continuo group. Instrumentation and instruments are adapted to the practical performance requirements of the repertoire from the 17th century to the early Romantic period. The Cantus Firmus Consort is the orchestra-in-residence of the «Opera at Schloss Waldegg», which takes place every two years.
