Carolina Baroque was organized by Dale Higbee in 1988 for the purpose of performing music of the Baroque period (c. 1600-1750) on instruments familiar to Monteverdi, Purcell, Dietrich Buxtehude,
Antonio Vivaldi, Georg Philipp Telemann, J.S. Bach, and George Frideric Handel during this Golden Age of Music. Since then the ensemble has performed in many cities in North Carolina, as well as in South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia. Carolina Baroque appeared on Public TV (WTVI-42), has received rave reviews in the press, and digital CD recordings of its Salisbury concerts have been broadcast many times over both Davidson College’s WDAV and Wake Forest University’s WFDD. Carolina Baroque is a funded member of the Arts Council of Rowan and an organizational member of Early Music America. The Music Director is a resident of Salisbury, NC, but the other artists are professional musicians from various North Carolina cities who have performed throughout the USA, as well as in Europe and South America.
In October 2011, the group’s director and recorder-player, Dr. Dale Higbee, announced that the spring 2011 performance was their last, and that the group has issued its 33rd and final recording. Dale Higbee decided that in spite of the fact that he has unusually good vision and hearing for an 86-year-old, it was time to retire from performing. |
