The German tenor, Jean Philipp Chey, had his musical roots in the Thomanerchor Leipzig, where he received formative training under the Thomaskantors Georg Christoph Biller and Gotthold Schwarz. This time laid the foundation for his passion and expertise in sacred music, particularly in the Evangelist roles in the works of J.S. Bach and Heinrich Schütz. After intensive training at the Thomasgymnasium (Class of 2015), his path led him to the Hochschule für Musik Saar (since March 2018), where he studied singing with Frank Wörner and Tanja Ponten until 2024, before beginning his master's degree in concert singing at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt (since October 2024) with Thomas Heyer. In addition to his studies, he participated in the Mainz Baroque Vocal Excellence Program, where he worked with renowned artists such as Paul Goodwin, Alessandro De Marchi, György Vashegyi, Nicholas Tamagna, Elisabeth Scholl, and James Taylor.
Jean-Philipp Chey is a versatile tenor who is equally at home on the operatic stage and in the concert hall. As a concert soloist, Jean Philipp Chey has made a name for himself primarily in the interpretation of oratorios. He is particularly acclaimed for his performances of the Evangelist roles in the oratorios and Passions of J.S. Bach and Heinrich Schütz. He has also performed convincingly in many J.S. Bach's cantatas and has been highly praised for his clear diction and stylistic diversity. His repertoire also includes major classical works such as Joseph Haydn's Creation, with which he made his successful debut in 2024.
In addition to his concert activities, Jean-Philipp Chey is passionate about musical theater. His roles include Dr. Eisenstein in Richard Strauss' Die Fledermaus, Monostatos in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Albert Herring in Benjamin Britten's opera of the same name, and the soldier in Viktor Ullmann's Der Kaiser von Atlantis in a production by Junge Oper Baden-Württemberg. Most recently, he appeared in Henry Purcell's Benjamin Britten in a LauschWerk production, where he shone both as a soloist in the role of Autumn and as part of the ensemble. Next year, he plans to sing the role of Ferrando in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte for the first time.
Jean Philipp Chey is also a prizewinner of the 31st International Singing Competition Chamber Opera Schloss Rheinsberg, where he sang the role of Alberto Caeiro in the premiere of Eckehard Mayer's opera P. His collaboration there with artists such as director André Bücker and the Ensemble Ascolta under the musical direction of Nicholas Kok provided valuable experience in dealing with new musical theater.
With his extensive training, his impressive stage presence, and his eye for musical subtlety, Jean-Philipp Chey excels in opera, operetta, and concert performances. His vocal versatility and deep understanding of the diverse demands of each genre make him a sought-after artist of his generation. |
