Daniel Cromeenes (Counter-tenor)

Born: November 18, 1975 - Monrovia, California, USA

The American counter-tenor and piano accompanist, Daniel Cromeenes, obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, Piano and Voice from Biola University (1993-1998); and his Master of Music Performance degree in Accompanying from East Carolina University (2000-2002).

Daniel Cromeenes brings a wealth of experience to his singing and is known by his colleagues as a solid and versatile musician. He has toured across Europe, Japan, and the USA with the Grammy Award-winning ensemble Chanticleer (2005-2006), singing repertoire ranging from chant and Renaissance motets to contemporary works and spiritual arrangements. He performed as soloist for the 2014 American Bach Soloists Festival & Academy, including J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor (BWV 232) conducted by Jeffrey Thomas. He can be seen as a member of the chorus in ABS’ film Handel’s Messiah in Grace Cathedral. He has also appeared in the Oregon Bach Festival Chorus (June 2016-2019) with conductors Matthew Halls, Scott Allen Jarrett, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, John Nelson, and JoAnn Falletta as well as in concerts with Bach Collegium San Diego (Director: Ruben Valenzuela).

Local to the San Francisco Bay Area, Daniel Cromeenes was featured singing lute songs for Oakland Ballet in Graham Lustig’s Consort and is a frequent soloist for Bay Area early music performances, including Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's Stabat Mater and Purcell’s Come Ye Sons of Art with Marin Baroque. He received much acclaim for his performance of J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245) at the Mission Church Santa Clara under the baton of Scot Hanna-Weir with the San Jose Chamber Orchestra. He has performed Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria and solo motets, and is regularly called upon to sing George Frideric Handel's works, including Messiah, Israel in Egypt, Dixit Dominus, and Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne. A huge fan of J.S. Bach, he has made it a goal to learn every alto aria in J.S. Bach's 200+ cantatas. He is also a reliable interpreter of lesser-known works by early Baroque composers, performing Carissimi’s Jonas and Charpentier’s Le Reniement de St. Pierre with California Bach Society and recording new editions of Alessandro Scarlatti's works with Arcadiana.

Daniel Cromeenes was a member of Chanticleer (July 2005-July 2006). He is a regular vocalist in the elite ensembles Clerestory (since February 2008), American Bach Choir (since December 2006; Director: Jeffrey Thomas), and Philharmonia Baroque Chorale (since 2011; Directors: Nicholas McGegan/Richard Egarr), Marin Baroque, Artists' Vocal Ensemble (AVE), Sanford Dole Ensemble, Grace Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys, and St. Paul's Episcopal Church Chancel Choir (Burlingame). In addition to his singing, several of his choral arrangements have been performed by Clerestory. Active as a private vocal coach, he enjoys sharing his knowledge of singing and Baroque ornamentation with others. His professional experience in piano accompaniment includes choirs, opera, musical theater, art song, instrumental sonatas/concertos, recitals, weddings, and church services. His background in vocal training has given him skills for coaching from the piano. He served as Staff Accompanist at Biola University (August 2002-July 2005); and currently serves Staff Accompanist at Santa Clara University (since January 2007). He currently lives in San Francisco, California.
