Lior Eitan (Flute, Piccolo)

Born: 1963 (?) - Tel Aviv, Israel

The Isreali flutist, Lior Eitan, he studied with Uri Shoham, former principal flutist of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and made his debut as soloist at the age of 13 with the chamber orchestra of his hometown, Holon. He completed his studies in Switzerland with Peter Lukas Graf and Andras Adorjan. He completed his studies with distinction in the Tel Aviv Academy of Music in 1985.

In the same year, at age 22, Lior Eitan was appointed principal flutist of the Israel Sinfonietta, Beer-Sheva (1985-1988). Since 1988 he has been solo piccolo player with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Appointed to the IPO by its Music Director Zubin Mehta, he has performed under Daniel Barenboim, Leonard Bernstein, James Levine, Kurt Masur, Zubin Mehta, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Georg Solti, among others, in many of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals. He can be heard on the orchestra's numerous recordings for Sony Classical, Teldec and Deutsche Gramophon.

Lior Eitan has performed as soloist with most of the Israeli orchestras. He appears in recitals throughout Israel, performing on all members of the flute family. One of Israel's leading flutists, he has for many years been active as a soloist and in the chamber music scene. He plays freely on all four members of the flute family - piccolo, flute, alto flute and bass flute - and on many occasions uses all four of them in the same concert.

Since 1997 Lior Eitan has devoted most of his time to developing his career as a piccolo soloist. As a piccolo virtuoso, he contributes greatly to the promotion of awareness and knowledge of this unique instrument, in his appearances as soloist, in his master-classes and in his commissions of original works. Until now, twelve works by Israeli composers have been commissioned and dedicated to Lior, who has given their world premiere. As part of his strong belief that the piccolo is musically unlimited, he also writes unique arrangements for piccolo of masterworks by classical composers, such as the Arpeggione Sonata by Schubert and the Adagio and Allegro Op. 70 by Schumann. He has also recently arranged Georg Philipp Telemann’s Quartet in D minor for Piccolo and string orchestra, and transcribed Weber’s Andante and Rondo Ungarese and Tchaikovsky’s Roccoco Variations. Lior is also the editor of "Music for Piccolo", a series regularly published by Or Tav Music Publications.

In recent years Lior Eitan has also played in Great Britain, China, India, Jordan and the USA. In August 2005 Lior Eitan was invited to participate in the American Flute Association's annual convention, where he gave a piccolo recital and was the soloist in the American premiere of the Concerto for Piccolo and Orchestra by Israeli-American composer Avner Dorman with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra at the NFA Convention.

As member of the Israel Flute Ensemble, Lior Eitan has recorded three CD's for Centaur records. He has also recorded a recital of both flute and piccolo with harp. He recently completed recording a CD for Meridian records, which includes works by J.S. Bach, Mozart, L.v. Beethoven and Schubert, arranged for piccolo and guitar.

`with the appearance of Lior Eitan, the stage suddenly seemed flooded with light. Eitan`s tone is bright, and he plays immaculately. Each tone, each phrase, is flawlessly modelled...`
`It is a pleasure to listen to Eitan. He posseses a brilliant technique and he takes any music seriously and treats it lovingly...` - Jerusalem Post
`A mature player, with rare virtuoso qualities, profound musical understanding and amazing colourfulness...` - Voice of Jerusalem
`Lior Eitan proved that the sound of the flute is not only sweet. It can also cry out with pain...` - Davar
