The Freiberger Domchor (Freiberg Cathedral Choir) has been an integral component of the musical life in central Saxony for decades. The musical tradition at Freiberg Cathedral reaches back until before the Reformation. For several centuries, the church music at the cathedral was performed by boys from the neighbouring grammar school. In the early 19th century a singing academy was founded in Freiberg that was meant to support the schoolboys’ performances at the cathedral. In the footsteps of this tradition, there are currently 80 singers from Freiberg and the surrounding areas that sing in the Freiberger Domchor. Since the 1990's engaging in a historically oriented performance practice has been an important component of concerts of the Freiberger Domchor. The choir has performed together with the Batzdorfer Hofkapelle, Dresdner Barockorchester, Cappella Sagittariana Dresden, and Wiener Akademie.
The Capella Vocale is the chamber choir of the Freiberger Domchor. It has been initiated by the cathedral’s Kantor Albrecht Koch in order to be able to perform music in the historically appropriate context together with the Great Silbermann organ. |
