The German church musician, choral conductor and organist, Christoph Gerthner, received his first piano lessons at the age of 6 and began playing the organ in 2006. After graduating from high school, he first studied Mathematics, graduating with Master's degree; and only then decided to study music. Since 2016 he has been studying for his Bachelor's degree in Church Music at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart in the classes of Professor Helmut Deutsch (organ), Cathedral organist Professor Johannes Mayr (improvisation) and Maria Sofianska (piano). His favorite subject was singing. This has helped him personally and in choir work it is also important to him to support the singers with their voice training.
In addition to his studies, Christoph Gerthner works as organist for the Oswald-Wolfbusch-Kirchengemeinde (Stuttgart-Weilimdorf) and as choir director for the Evangelischen Kirchenchors Kirchberg (Murr). He also sings in chamber choirs and vocal ensembles, including the Humaine Kammerchor (Director: Professor Denis Rouger). Since 2023, he serves as Kantor of the Petrikirche in Mülheim an der Ruhr, succeeding Gijs Burger. The large and good choir work that Gijs Burger has built up in the community over many years, with a singing school, choir and chamber choir, was the decisive factor in his applying for this position. |
