The Gürzenich-Orchester Köln ranks among the prominent concert and opera orchestras of Germany. Its name refers to Gürzenich, the historical-representative Ballhaus of Köln, where the concerts took place from 1857 on. Numerous important works were premiered of by the Köln's orchestras, such as Johannes Brahms' Double Concerto, Gustav Mahler's 5th Symphony or Strauss' Till Eulenspiegel. Since 1986 the ensemble is resident at the Kölner Philharmonie and gives there about 50 concerts annually. The Principal Conductor of the Gürzenich-Orchester since 2003 is Markus Stenz, who took over also the post of the head conductor of the Köln City in the 2004-2005 season. |
