Christian Hilz (Bass-Baritone)

Born: April 23, 1966 - Stuttgart, Baden-Württemburg, Germany

The German bass-baritone, Christian-Kraft, Hilz, graduated his singing studies from 1987-1995 at the Folkwanghoch- schule in Essen with Professor Jakob Stämpfli. Courses and private studies with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Kurt Moll, Jan-Hendrik Rootering and Joshua Rifkin completed his education.

The enormous repertoire of Christian Hilz comprises the classical literature within the cornerstones ancient and contemporary music. With internationally well-known conductors like Andrew Parrott, Joshua Rifkin, Nicolas McGegan, Martin Haselböck, Stephen Stubbs, he cooperates regularly. Since 1993 an international career has developed with performances at festivals like Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Prager Frühling, Resonanzen Konzerthaus Vienna, Oude Muziek Utrecht, Bachwoche Ansbach, Bachfest Leipzig, Festival Luzern, Stuttgart European Music Festival, London Promīs Concerts and invitations to orchestras like Münchner Philharmoniker, Kölner Rundfunkorchester, London Mozart Players, New York Bach Ensemble, Ensemble Tafelmusik, Toronto, Orchester Wiener Akademie, Norwegian Baroque Orchestra a.o.

The dramatic capabilities Christian Hilz could prove impressively in the field of the opera invitations after his debut on stage as Papageno at the opera festival in Baden (Switzerland) led him to Vienna, Potsdam, Kiel, Düsseldorf a.o. where he demonstrated his "talent as a comedian and for acting and dramatic art", which the trade press since then attested enthusiastically for his performances.

The far variety of expressiveness and change capacity of Christian Hilz' voice has an effect in the song especially. He performs the romantic and modern song repertoire, first of all together with his accompanist Katia Bouscarrut, piano, solo programs of the Baroque period a.o. with Stephen Stubbs and Alexander Weimann.

Invitations to cooperation with Ivor Bolton and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, with Martin Haselböck and the Wiener Akademie at the Salzburg Festival, at the Mozartfest Würzburg and in the Alte Oper Frankfurt, with Choir and Orchestra of the WDR at Mortierīs Ruhrtriennale, the Norwegian Baroque Orchestra in Oslo and Trondheim and with Stephen Stubbs and his Ensemble Tragicomedia, as well as a recording of Bruno Walter and Gustav Mahler Lieder for the norwegian label 2L were the highlights of the season 2002-2003.

Numerous broadcast and CD productions for Sony Classics, Capriccio and others document Christian Hilz' musical career that was appreciated by the Bavarian Staatsfoerderpreis for Young Artists in 1996 additionally. Among the singers who have studied with him and/or attended his master-classes: Tiago Amado Gomes (Baritone), Michael Marz (Baritone).
