Marcel Jorquera Vinyals (Counter-tenor)

Born: Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain

The Catalan counter-tenor, Marcel Jorquera Vinyals, studied during his childhood in Barcelona, 12 years of modern oboe and sang in a children's choir. After graduating high school, he completed a BSc in Genetics at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (2013-2017) and an MSc in Scientific Communication at the Universitat de Barcelona (September 2017-June 2018). In this same period, he was part of the Youth Choir of the Palau de la Música and the Catalan National Youth Choir, institutions with which he worked with musicians such as Simon Halsey, Sir Simon Rattle, Josep Vila, Filippo Maria Bressan, Lluís Vilamajó and Gianandrea Noseda. He finished his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music at The Royal Conservatoire of The Hague (2019-2023), where he studied with Rita Dams, Francesca Aspromonte, Robin Blaze, Peter Kooij, and Pascal Bertin. He also studied Baroque oboe with Frank de Bruine and choir conducting lessons with Jos Vermunt. he was selected to sing in master-classes with Sonia Tedla, Ulrike Hofbauer, Manfred Cordes, and Alessandro Quarta.

Since June 2022, Marcel Jorquera Vinyals is a freelance counter-tenor specializing in early music based in The Hague, The Netherlands. He has sung as a soloist with such performance organizations as Residentie Bach Ensembles (Residentie Kamerkoor & Residentie Bachorkest), Dutch Baroque Orchestra, and Bachcelona Akademie, among others. Performances include several cantatas by J.S. Bach, including Matthäus-Passion BWV 244, Dietrich Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri, Heinrich Schütz' Musikalische Exequien, Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria, Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms and Arvo Pärt's Litany. As a choir and ensemble singer, he regularly sings with Cappella Amsterdam (Director: Daniel Reuss) and Cantores Martini in The Netherlands, and has worked with the chamber choir of the Cathedral of Barcelona and with Bach Collegium Barcelona.

Apart from the best-known works from the Early Music field, his favourite repertoire is madrigals for several voices and the lute songs from the period encompassing the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque, with a particular interest in Italian music. He has produced, conducted, and performed in various projects with Fonos, Stile Spezzato, and Lettere in Musica, organizations specializing in this and other repertoire for small vocal ensembles.

Being an enthusiastic learner of languages, Marcel Jorquera Vinyals is driven to vocal music through the text, the sound of the words, and the poetic nuances of the expressions. These reasons drive him to design programs where poetry and storytelling are put in the centre. Another field he is very passionate about is traditional songs, especially in Catalan or in other languages that nowadays are minoritized.
