The German conductor, Professor Jürgen Jürgens, founder and director of
Monteverdi-Chor Hamburg (Monteverdi Choir, Hamburg), received his musical training in Frankfurt under Professor Kurt Thomas and in Freiburg/Breisgau under Professor Konrad Lechner. During his studies, he developed interest in Italian choir music, concentrating on the music of Claudio Monteverdi who was then relatively unknown. Through his writings for different broadcasting stations, he landed in Hamburg, where he started conducting the
Monteverdi-Chor Hamburg since 1955.
Besides conducting the Monteverdi-Chor Hamburg, the University Choir, the University Orchestra and the Camerata Accademica, Jürgen Jürgens does intensive research on questions of historical performance techniques and edits mostly unknown vocal music of the 17th and 18th centuries. He has produced many of these works with his ensembles for broadcasting and recording. One of his most important editions is the Marian Vespers by Claudio Monteverdi, which was published in 1977 by Universal Edition in Vienna. In 1966, he was appointed University Music Director and in 1973, he was called to serve as professor at the University of Hamburg.
In recognition of Jürgen Jürgens’ special merits in representing the University of Hamburg on the international scene, he was conferred the University Medal in 1976. |
