The Korean-born baritone, David Dong-Geun Kim, finished his B.M. and M.M. degrees from Kyung-Hee University in Seoul. He then came to America for further study. He earned another Master of Music degree in voice from University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music (CCM) and currently he is in final progression for the DMA. In addition, he finished an Artist Diploma at Yale University's Institute of Sacred Music, specializing in Baroque Music, German Oratorio and Chamber Ensemble.
While he was studying at CCM he appeared as a bass soloist for J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245) and Igor Stravinsky's Pribaoutki with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Johannes Brahms’s German Requiem and Philip Glass’s Symphony No. 5 with the CCM Philharmonia Orchestra, and J.S. Bach’s Cantata BWV 147 with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. He hopes to deepen his knowledge in theare as of sacred music and German Lieder during his AD program at the ISM (2009).
David has made several important concert and recital debuts since coming to the USA. His recent recital, Schubert’s Winterreise, was described as “One of the most moving, powerful and accomplished recital of the year” by conductor Simon Carrington. Kim has been presented in numerous recitals across the USA and Canada, performing many of the major works by Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms and Gustav Mahler, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Finzi, as well as earlier repertoire such as the lute songs of John Dowland.
On the concert stage, David Kim has been a featured soloist in works ranging from Monteverdi, Heinrich Schütz J.S. Bach, and George Frideric Handel to Felix Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms and Philip Glass. His performances of Philip Glass' Symphony No. 5 “Requiem, Bardo, Nirmanakaya” led the composer himself to praise the “special character” of Kim's “rich voice.” Recent performances include a role in I. Stravinsky's Les Noces, which was his first major foray into the Russian repertoire. From the summer of 2008, he has been appearing as a soloist for Discovery Concert series at the Oregon Bach Festival (OBF). The repertoire he sang at Oregon Bach Festival includes J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248), St. John Passion (BWV 245), and B-minor Mass (BWV 232). In March in 2010, he was invited to the Taipei Bach Festival for four discovery concerts and one complete performance of St. John Passion (BWV 245), conducted by Helmuth Rilling. In December in 2010, he sang two Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) concerts with Leipziger Vocalensemble at Thomaskirche in Leipzig, Germany. Recently he appeared as a bass soloist of 4 Messiah concerts in Connecticut conducted by William Boughton.
A recording of Felix Mendelssohn and J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243) settings, conducted by Simon Carrington, was released in 2009. |
