The Leipziger Concert (= LCE) performs early music with historically correct instrumentations appropriate to each piece. The members of the ensemble are all specialists for early music, predominantly professors and assistant professors from the early music department of the Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy School for Music and Theatre in Leipzig, as well as other world class soloists. Since its founding in 1997. the ensemble has worked under the direction of such recognized musicians as Thomaskantor Georg Christoph Biller, Kenji Otani, Zvi Meniker, John Holloway and Alexander Weimann. The group has worked with great success with Susanne Scholz since her appointment in Leipzig as Professor of baroque violin and ensemble studies in 1999.
The Leipziger Concert has focused particularly on the abundant music of central Germany of the 17th and 18th centuries. Already in the conception of its founding concert, with the participation of the Thomanerchor, works of the great masters Heinrich Schütz and J.S. Bach on the one hand, and of heretofore unknown composers on the other, were explored.
As well as performing on tour, the ensemble focuses its attention on the different historical halls in the musical city of Leipzig, ie. the two main churches, St. Thomas and St. Nicholas, as well as other halls of artistic merit. Concerts such as those for the Intemational Johann Sebastian Bach Competition, for the I998 MDR Summer Music Festival on the anniversary of J.S. Bach's death in the St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig, and for the Bachfest Leipzig were early highlights. Besides single concerts, whose programs are developed through the Institute of Musicology at the University of Leipzig and the Leipzig Bach Archives, the ensemble is in demand most importantly for close cooperation with vocal ensembles. The ensemble's work also consists of intense cooperation with the University of Leipzig Musical Instrument Museum. |
