The German composer, music educator, arranger and conductor., Hans Mielenz (for certain works, he used the pseudonym Peter Rambo), received instrumental lessons as a little boy; piano lessons were at the age of four; at 11 he began to study the flute, and later, the clarinet, oboe, and saxophone. Upon receiving his diploma from the Humanistic Gymnasium in 1927, he enrolled at the Berlin Academy for Church Music and Music Education, and concurrently studied conducting at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Berlin.
In 1934, following his final examinations in conducting, Hans Mielenz worked as a free-lance composer, arranger, conductor, and instrumentalist until the start of World War II. From 1942 to 1944 he taught conducting at Berlin's Municipal Music Conservatory, playing jazz on the side as saxophonist, clarinetist, and accordionist in several small dance orchestras and performed at many restaurants and bars in Berlin. As a composer and arranger for "any instruments and every style" he first devoted himself to lighter music, but later produced symphonic works as well.
After World War II, in 1946, Hans Mielenz became conductor at the "Neue Scala" Varieté in Berlin. A lucky break came in 1950 when he was named director of the East Berlin Radio Dance Orchestra (Großes Tanzorchester des Berliner Rundfunks). In 1968-1969 he held the position of conductor at the Municipal Theater in Baden, south of Vienna. Since 1956, he lived in the Federal Republic of Germany, and made Aschau in the Bavarian Chiemgau his domicile, from time to time conducting the Aschau brass band. He was his organist and choir leader as well as conductor of the Musikkapelle Aschau (1959-1978). He was also conductor of the Stadtkapelle Rosenheim eV. In 1968 and 1969 he became conductor of the orchestra at the urban theater in Baden bei Wien. In 1979 he was awarded the Golden Service Medal of the Music Association of Upper and Lower Bavaria. In 1984 he received the cross of merit from the Confederation Internationale des Societe Musicales (CISM). In 1996 he died after a long serious illness.
As a composer, Hans Mielenz wrote more than 130 works for different genres. has found creative impulses in the music of Arnold Schoenberg as well as in jazz; in Wagner, Georges Bizet and Debussy as well as in Gershwin and Paul Hindemith. The broad spectrum of his works ranges from light semi-classical music through choral and liturgical works, all the way to compositions for symphony orchestra and symphonic band. In addition to symphonic music there are choral works, church music and chamber music costumes together. He composed a large number of works for the repertoire of harmonics orchestras. |
