David Morales (Choral Conductor)

Born: November 3, 1949 - Los Angeles, California, USA

The American choral conductor, David Morales, Studied Music at El Camino College (September 1967-June 1969). He studied Music Theory (1969-1971) obtained his Master’s Degree in Choral Music (1969-1973) from the University of Southern California; and his Doctorate of Ministry in Spirituality from the University of Creation Spirituality (1997-2002)

David Morales is the Founder (September 1987) and Artistic Director of Cantare in Oakland, California, and director of Cantare’s adult choirs. Directing Cantare's 100-voice symphonic Chorale and 24-voice Chamber Ensemble. Providing oversight to Cantare's Children's Music Education program, which serves 3,000 inner city Oakland students each week. Going into his 55th year of professional conducting experience, he has conducted over 200 separate concerts with Cantare, encapsulating over 1,800 compositions, featuring large choirs with full orchestra and smaller ensembles of selected voices, performing music in traditional, contempo-rary and numerous ethnic styles. His choirs have been featured at both national and regional American Choral Directors Association conventions and on national television.

David Morales taught at Laney College in Oakland, California (September 1987-June 1989); then was Professor at Merritt College (of Peralta Community College) in Oakland for 15 years (August 1989-May 2014): Teaching general music education classes in addition to piano, voice and choral ensembles. Served as Department Chair, Chair of Dept. Chairs, Chair of College Council, Co-Chair of College Education Master Planning Committee, Budget Committee, District Education Committee. He was also Minister of Music at First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley, California (November 1975-June 1987); and worked at Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church in Lafayette, California (January 1990-February 1999).

David Morales knows how to coax the best from emerging and experienced singers, preparing vocalists to sing challenging works at proficient levels of excellence. He inspires singers to impart their utmost to the music. David’s vision, experience, expertise, musical talent, and conducting aplomb have served as a steady, guiding force for Cantare’s success.

In May 2022, David Morales was the recipient of the Jefferson Service Award, recognition in the S.F. Bay Area for building communities with inspiration and innovation in contributing to a better future for those around them.
