Kensuke Ohira (Conductor, Organ)

Born: February 7, 1986 - Tokyo Japan

The Japanese conductor and organist, Kensuke Ohira, received his first musical training at the Tokyo University of Arts. Since the fall of 2010 , he studied on a scholarship awarded by DAAD and the Japanese Ministry of Culture at the Musikhochschule Würzburg in Germany, where he graduated the course of advanced studies in organ (Meisterklassendiplom) in 2013 and with a Bachelor in Sacred Music in 2015. His most influential musical teachers were Christoph Bossert, Masaaki Suzuki, Hiroko Asai and Rie Hiroe (organ), Glen Wilson (harpsichord), Jörg Straube (choral conducting) and Alexander Schimpf (piano). He obtained his Master of Music degree in New Music from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München.

From 2015-2016, Kensuke Ohira served as musical assistant to KMD Kay Johannsen Kay Johannsen with his sensembles Solistenensemble Stimmkunst & Stiftsbarock Stuttgart at Stiftskirche Stuttgart. At the same time he took courses at Hochschule für Musik und Theater München (University of Music of Munich) with Professor Bernhard Haas in Comtemporary Music and Sacred Music (Kirchenmusik A). His First Place in the ION - Musica Sacra 2016 competition in Nuremberg ("Johann-Pachelbel-Preis") was the starting point of an international career. Currently, he is Kay Johannsen's music partner / colleague as Stiftsorganist at Stiftskirche, Stuttgart.

Kensuke Ohira is regularily invited to organ events and festivals such as Internationale Dresdner Orgelwochen (Frauenkirche / International Organ Weeks Dresden), Internationaler Orgelzyklus Essen (Dom / Essen Cathedral), Orgelsommer Freiburger Münster (Freiburg Cathedral Organ Summer), Konzerthaus Berlin, Saison Musicale d'Orgue (Cathédrale de Fréjus / France).

Kensuke Ohira performs as a soloist, in orchestras, such as the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra (Camille Saint-Saëns's Symphony No. 3), Gedai Philharmonia (Thierry Escaich's Concerto for Organ and Orchestra, at the first performance in Japan), and as a member of the ensemble Muromachi (Director: Professor Teycheney Laurent). As a conductor he co-founded in December 2010 the Bach-Kantaten-Club Würzburg and was its Musical Director from 2013 to 2015.
