Anna Paradiso (Harpsichord)

Born: Bari, Italy

The Italian harpsichordist, Anna Paradiso, eceived her solo diplomas in piano with honors and in harpsichord with full marks, and she has won several piano-competitions in Italy. She went on studying harpsichord for Gordon Murray in Vienna. With an academic career in Italy, at the Oxford University and in Sweden, she finally resumed a successful career in music. She received a Master in harpsichord at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm with Mayumi Kamata and Ulf Söderberg. She also studied Italian Baroque music and basso continuo at the Conservatorio “Cimarosa” in Avellino (Italy) with Enrico Baiano (Cappella della Pietà dei Turchini, Naples). At the same time, she had lessons on French music with Christophe Rousset in Paris. She also played for Ton Koopman in a master-class. Parallel to this, Anna Paradiso has being studying the original sources on basso continuo - with particular attention to the Italian ones - and has undertook an in-depth research on original fingerings applied to historically informed-practice. She aqlso holds a PhD in classical Latin poetry.

Anna Paradiso performs to increasing critical acclaim, with recordings for BIS and concerts in prestigious festivals in Japan, the USA, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Germany and UK. She has performed and has projects with several ensembles and orchestras: Mellersta Österbotten Kammarorkester (Finland), Arte dei Suonatori (Poland), Gävle Symfoniorkester, Stockholms Bachsällskap (Stockholm), Ängbyorkester (Stockholm), Harmonia orchestra dell'Università di Bari (Italy), Florilegium Vocis (Italy). She has also performed concertos with orchestras as a soloist in several occasions (for instance with Styrsjö kammarsolisten, Birmingham Conservatoire String Ensemble, members of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, etc.).

Anna Paradiso is co-founder of the Baroque ensemble Paradiso Musicale together with her husband Dan Laurin (recorder), Henrik Frendin (viola) and Mats Olofsson (cello). Paradiso Musicale's first recording for BIS (“The Father, the Son and the Godfather”), with music by J.S. Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann, was “BBC Music Magazine Chamber Music Choice of the month” in February 2012 and received enthusiastic reviews all over the world. Together with Dan Laurin Anna recorded for BIS “Songs of Yesterday”, with forgotten treasures from 1900 composed for recorder and piano or harpsichord which was very well received by the international press. Her first solo album with BCR, “Cembalo Paradiso”, which came out in June 2012, is a powerful, personal interpretative statement that combines new musicological research with a typical Italian temperament. It includes solo works and concertos with orchestra from Italy, France, Germany and England between 1600 and 1900.

Among the next projects, there are three recordings for BIS with music by Antonio Vivaldi and Roman. Anna Paradiso has also researched in the vast repertoire of semi-unknown music from Naples, in the library of San Pietro a Majella. Her next solo album will be a collection of unknown and more famous baroque pieces for harpsichord from this city.

Anna Paradiso is now resident in Sweden. She has given lectures in several European conservatories and courses (UK, Finland, Italy, Sweden) on classical rhetoric and baroque music and has been part of a didactic project at the Greenwich College in London. She teaches rhetoric and harpsichord at the Baroque Music Summer School “Style Matters”, in Puglia (Italy).
