The German violinist and conductor, Julia Schröder, was born into a musical family in southern Germany. At 5 years old she received her first violin lessons from her father. She soon won 1st prizes at the competition " Jugend musiziert" in chamber music and violin solo. At 15, she entered the Conservatoire "Gasteig" in Munich, where she studied as a young student with Urs Stieler. There followed by several master-classes, inter alia, with Ana Chumachenko, Melos Quartet, Lorand Fenyves, Saschko Gawrilof and Adelina Oprean (the latter since 1999 in Basel).
Julia Schröder is a much sought-after soloist and chamber musician. She is at home both in the world of modern violin playing, as well as in historical performance practice, as well as in in tango, improvisation and gypsy jazz. As a soloist she has performed in the major concert halls in Europe, including Musikverein in Vienna, the Philharmonie in Berlin, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Cité de la Musiques in Paris, and the Barbican Center in London. Schröder often performs with various orchestras in Germany and Switzerland, including the Sinfonieorchester Basel, Camerata Stuttgart (she was is principal second violin in this chamber orchestra, founded in 1999), Sinfonieorchester des Hessischen Rundfunk Frankfurt and Nürnberger Symphoniker. Other solo engagements have been with the Brandenburgischen Staatsorchester Frankfurt, Kammerorchester Basel, Concerto Copenhagen, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra Il Giardino Armonico. She is also a welcome guest as concertmaster of the Freiburger Barockorchester, Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona I Nacional de Catalunya, and as a section leader in the ensemble Il Giardino Armonico.
Julia Schröder has performed at the Chamber Music Festivals in Davos, Gstaad, Luxembourg, Middleburg, Amsterdam, Stuttgart and and the Triennale in Köln. At the Festival im Herzogschloß in Straubing she is a regular guest. Schröder and Cecilia Bartoli have been collaborating closely since 2005. Together they have performed in many of Europe’s leading concert halls. Her chamber music partners include inter alia Trio Parnassus, Christoph Berner, Werner Güra, Angela Hewitt, Gidon Kremer, Gérard Wyss, Dorothee Oberlinger, Marcel Ponseele, Maurice Steger and Christian Zacharias. Since 2012 she is violinist of the Merel Quartet.
Julia Schröder is concertmaster and director of the Kammerorchester Basel since 2004. As leader of the Kammerorchester Basel, Julia Schröder collaborates regularly with conductors such as Giovanni Antonini, Paul McCreesh, Kristjan Järvi, Christopher Hogwood and Paul Goodwin. She has led the orchestra during tours with Sol Gabetta, Marijana Mijanovic, Giuliano Carmignola, Angelika Kirchschlager, Andreas Scholl, Giuliano Sommerhalder, Pieter Wispelwey, Angela Hewitt and Núria Rial.
Since 2010 Julia Schröder has been Professor of violin at the Conservatory of Music in Freiburg im Breisgau , Germany.
Her CD recordings have been released by Deutsche Harmonia Mundi and Harmonia Mundi France. Her debut CD was with Ensemble Minus One. A live live recording of a concert of the Logo Quartet, in which Julia Schroeder played the first violin, was broadcast on Swiss Radio DRS 2. Her discography includes a disc of W.A. Mozart, Haydn and Martinu under Christopher Hogwood and discs of Johann Friedrich Fasch and George Frideric Handel. In 2012 her CD of G.F. Handel’s Violin Sonatas for the Deurche Harmonia Mundi label was named “Star of the Month“ by the magazine Fono Forum. With the recording of Georg Philipp Telemann’s violin concertos with Kammerorchester Basel she won the Echo Classic Award 2012. An album of G.P. Telemann opera arias with the soprano Núria Rial was chosen for the best opera arias and duets of the year. The next CD to be released will be J.S. Bach's Violin Concertos with Harmonia Nundi. |
