The Swiss tenor, Jonathan Spicher, began singing as a child under the instruction of Marie-Françoise Schuwey at Fribourg Music Conservatory as a soprano and later as a tenor. He first took to the stage as a soprano soloist under the direction of several Fribourg conductors. Before deciding to concentrate on classical music, Spicher worked on French pop music and took part in several television competitions. He graduated with a bachelor from Michel Brodard’s class at Lausanne University of Music (HEMU) and went on to study with Scot Weir at Zürich University of Music, where he received an Master of Art degree in Music Performance. He was winner of the Colette Mosetti scholarship in 2010.
Jonathan Spicher specialises in oratorio and the early music repertoire, in particular the French haute-contre. His broad repertoire includes Monteverdi madrigals, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle as well as works of W.A. Mozart, Rameau, Charpentier, Felix Mendelssohn (Paulus and Ellias) and J.S. Bach (Passions (BWV 244 & BWV 245) and Mass in B Minor) (BWV 232). He has regular engagements as a soloist in Switzerland and France and has sung the greatest works of the oratorio repertoire as a chorister and soloist with the Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne (conductor Michel Corboz) and the Orlando ensemble (conductor Laurent Gendre). His penchant for the Lied led him to Eric Cerantola, with whom he frequently performs, and to Hartmut Höll with whom he perfected his performance of the repertoire.
Jonathan Spicher has sung the opera roles of Yamadori in Madama Butterfly (2012 at Fribourg Opera House), Alfred in La Chauve-souris (Opéra Louise) and Oronte in George Frideric Handel's Alcina with Ouverture Opéra, Sion, directed by Julie Beauvais. In 2013, he sang the part of the Evangelist in J.S. Bach's St John Passion (BWV 245) for the first time and performed with the Geneva Chamber Opera Mengone in Haydn’s Lo Speziale. |
