The English flautist, Jennifer Stinton, studied the flute at the Royal Academy of Music in London and was subsequently awarded a Countess of Munster Scholarship and Arts Council Award to continue her studies in the USA with the iconic English-born flautist Geoffrey Gilbert. On her return to London she won a Martin Scholarship and student fellowship from the Academy to research new repertoire for the flute and has since been elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. A finalist in the 1987 Royal Overseas League Competition, She went on to win the 1988 South East Arts Platform Competition, which helped launched her career in England.
In 1989, Jennifer Stinton made her first of twelve recordings for Collins Classics, embracing much of the solo and chamber repertoire for the flute, including her own transcription of Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra. Stinton is committed to the promotion of new and rarely heard music. She has been a featured artist on BBC Radio 4 and her American Album with Malcolm Martineau was released following a highly successful, live BBC Concert Hall broadcast.
Perhaps the most highly regarded English flautist of her generation, Jennifer Stinton possesses an amazingly broad repertoire, from Baroque to modern, from the well-trodden paths to the adventurous byways. Her impressive technical skills on the flute have been compared with those of Martha Argerich on the piano. She has appeared as soloist, recitalist, and chamber player, and her collaborations are often out of the ordinary. She frequently appears as a soloist in London at the Wigmore Hall and the Southbank, having made her debut at the Royal Festival Hall in 1991, performing the Mozart’s D Major Concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra in the presence of HRH Diana, Princess of Wales. Throughout the 1990’s and into the new century, Stinton regularly appeared with leading British orchestras not only as a soloist but as Guest Principal Flute, including with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for a lengthy stint. An internationally recognised flautist, she has concertized across Europe and the Middle East, and has performed as soloist at many international festivals. Solo concerts abroad have included the performance of a concerto in the Concertgebouw which was broadcast live on Dutch television, a recital in Davos, Switzerland, for the World Economic Forum and tours of France, Scandinavia and the Middle East. In the 21st century Stinton remained active on all fronts.
Jennifer Stinton has made numerous recordings over the years for such labels as Collins Classics, Albany Records, Regis Records, and Resonance. In her 2008 recording “Hidden Tango”, on the Cadenza label, she teams up with guitarist Richard Hand in works by Piazzolla, Jerry Owen (the title work), and more mainstream fare by Debussy, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and others. Highly regarded on the contemporary scene for championing many new works, like John Gardner's Flute Concerto, which she recorded for ASV in 2000, she has had important new compositions dedicated to her, such as Matthew Curtis' Flute Concerto, which she also recorded for the Cameo label. But Stinton hasn't shortchanged the traditional side of her repertoire, as she has performed and recorded to great acclaim works by Antonio Vivaldi (acclaimed 1993 disc of flute concertos), Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Nielsen, Prokofiev, Khachaturian (in her own transcription of his Violin Concerto), Francis Poulenc, Rodrigo, Martinu, Copland, and many others. Among her more acclaimed recordings is the 2005 CD of the Nielsen Flute Concerto, on Regis Records.
Jennifer Stinton also leads a busy life as a teacher, working with private students and giving masterclasses throughout the UK, Europe, USA, and Turkey. |
