Louis Vyner was an American respected conductor who worked with the likes of Leopold Stokowski.
Louis Vyner was the first conductor of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra in Pennsylvania. The Orchestra made its official debut on May 1, 1947, at McCaskey High School Auditorium under his baton. Vyner also fostered young artists as soloists, a tradition that continues today. The one most associated with Vyner and the Reading Symphony Orchestra is pianist Andre Watts, who made his debut with them as a soloist in 1955 (?) at the age of 9.
Louis Vyner was also a champion of new music. In 1954 the Wissahickon Symphony Orchestra under his baton performed the premiere of Orlando Otey’s Poética with Benita Valente as soprano soloist. In 1956 the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra presented the premiere of Otey's Symphonia Brevé under Vyner, who had requested a symphonic work. The last movement of this work is the orchestral rendition of his already exciting piano composition, Alacrán. |
