Jay Wilkey (Baritone, Conductor)

Born: December 5, l934 - Irvington, Kentucky, USA

The American baritone, conductor, music pedagogue and musicologist, Jay Weldon Wilkey, is the son of Hubert Weldon and Tommye Weir Wilkey. He was valedictorian of his class at Madisonville and graduated summa cum laude at at Eastern New Mexico University. He also holds degrees from Indiana University, State University of Iowa and has additional study at Union Seminary in New York, UCLA and Tokyo.

Jay Wilkey appeared with Sante Fe Opera Company, the Indiana State Opera Theatre, and Sasa Mananas Musicolas in Forth Worth.

In 1961, Jay Wilkey served as assistant Professor of voice and music literature at Hardin-Simmons University, whre he was also director of vocal ensembles. He taught at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary: School of Church Music from 1955 to 1987. He has edited many works and published numerous articles, including:

Studies in the Solo Song Cycles of Selected Twentieth Century (1979)
Studies in the Solo Songs of Maurice Ravel (1979)

Studies in the Solo Song Cycles of Ned Rorem (1980)

Jay Wilkey now lives in Georgetown, Texas.
