Klaus Martin Ziegler was a German choirmaster, organist, and Protestant church musician (KMD = Church Music Director). He graduated with the conductor examination from his studies at Badischen Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe (1948-1950). He then studied at the Kirchenmusikalischen Institut Heidelberg (1950-1952) as a student of Wolfgang Fortner, Hermann Meinhard Poppen and Gerhard Nestler.
From 1952 to 1954, Klaus Martin Ziegler was Kantor in Karlsruhe-Rüppurr; from 1954 to 60 Kantor at Christuskirche Karlsruhe. In 1957 he became head of the church music department at the Badischen Hochschule für Musik. That same year he took a teaching position at the Pädagogischen Hochschule Karlsruhe. From 1960 to 1993 he was choir-master at Martinskirche (St. Martin's Church) in Kassel. There he founded in 1964 (according to Music an St. Martin) or 1965 (according to Wikipedia) the Vocalensemble Kassel, with whom he performed at the Donaueschinger Musiktagen. In 1967 he was appointed Church Music Director (KMD). In 1968, he became artistic director of the Evangelischen Kirchenmusikschule Schlüchtern. From 1970 to 1981, he took a teaching position for new music and choral conducting. He was also director of the Kantoreichor at the Westfälischen Kirchenmusikschule Herford. From 1981 to 1987, he directed the Südfunk-Chor Stuttgart. He was responsible for a new artistic profile of this choir by advocating new music of such composers as Luciano Berio, Schnebel, Mathias Spahlinger and Adriana Hölszky. With the foundation of the Kasseler Musiktage with the title “Neue Musik in der Kirche” (New Music in the Church), which emerged from the post-Easter “Woche für geistliche Musik der Gegenwart” (week for sacred music of today), he made Kassel a center of new sacred music. Numerous sacred works were performed under his direction, including Wir haben eine Hoffnung by Dietrich von Bausznern (1965 at the Donaueschinger Musiktagen) and the Mass Gebet der armen Seele by Giselher Klebe (1966 at the Kasseler Musiktagen). |
