Herbert Baumann (Composer)

Born: July 31, 1925 - Berlin, Germany

The German composer, Herbert Baumann, studied composition graduated from the International Music Institute in Berlin, where he studied composition with Paul Höffer and Boris Blacher and conducting with Sergiu Celibidache.

In 1947 Herbert Baumann conducted several concert with the Tschaikowsky-Symphonieorchester Berlin
From 1947 to 1953 he was Composer and Kapellmeister (music director) at the Deutschen Theater Berlin (his first stage music Agamemnons Tod by Gerhart Hauptmann). From 1953 to 1970 he was music director of Berlin's State theaters (Schiller- und Schlossparktheater). From 1971 to 1979 he was director of the Musikwesens am Bayerischen Staatsschauspiel. Since 1979 he works as freelance.

Herbert Baumann’s compositions were mainly for theatre and cinema and television. His ballet Alice im Wunderland was premiered in 1984 (Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Darmstadt, Hof/Bavaria). His ballet Rumpelstilzchen was premiered in 1985; total to date of over 220 performances at various opera houses (Augsburg, Hagen, Nordhausen, Würzburg, Nürnberg, Dortmund, Kiel, Coburg). He has composed music for about 500 stage productions for these and many other theaters, such as Burgtheater Wien, Akademietheater Wien, Schauspielhaus Zürich, Thalia-Theater Hamburg, Württembergisches Staatstheater Stuttgart, Hessisches Staatstheater Frankfurt und Wiesbaden. He has also composed music for about 40 TV plays.

His awards include: 1979 Silver Medal GDBA; 1990 Honorary Member BDZ; 1998 Honorary Diploma of GEMA (50 year membership); 1998 Federal Cross of Merit.

Herbert Baumann has given numerous performances of orchestral and chamber music at home and abroad (USA, Japan, Korea, and in almost all European countries).
