The German composer, Joachim Blume, was born, grew up and went to high school in Stettin, Pomerania. In 1941 he was drafted and joined the Navy. After a brief captivity, he again met his family in Bavaria. There, in 1945, he was accordionist in pubs of American soldiers. In 1947 he began his composition studies at the Munich’s Händel-Konservatorium. In 1949 he moved to the Rhineland, preparing himself for the entrance examination to the Musikhochschule, Köln, where he enrolled in October 1949. In 1953 he passed the exam as a piano teacher; in 1954, the final examination for the composition followed. Afterward, he was a music teacher at a secondary school and studied dodecaphony in Detmold (1959). In the same year he got married. Until 1964, a daughter and three sons were born.
From 1959 to 1963 Joachim Blume worked as assistant secretary for musical matters in the army, the Leadership Department. In 1963 he was appointed to the Kölner Musikhochschule; first as a lecturer in music theory. In 1969 he was appointed professor and in 1972 took over the management of a high school class in composition.
In 1955 Joachim Blume received a scholarship from the Cultural Committee of the Federation of German Industries, 1981, he won the first prize in the composition competition of the Ostdeutschen Kulturrates (East German Cultural Council). In 1986 he retired. In the next 15 years he was with his wife and sailboat in North, Central and South America en route, with only annual short stays in Germany. |
