The German composer, Hans (Ludwig Wilhelm) Brehme, studied first piano. He studied piano and composition at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin from 1922 to 1928, from 1926 with Wilhelm Kempff.
Hans Brehme served as piano teacher at the Hochschule für Musik in Stuttgart from 1928; teacher of composition from 1936; appointed professor in Stuttgart in 1940. After the "seizure" of the Nazis he was, since May 1933, member of NSDAP and composed music for the stadium game of the national revolution. His opera Der Uhrmacher von Straßburg was premiered in 1941. He was professor at the Hochschulinstitut für Musikerziehung in Trossingen from 1945 to 1949, before returning in 1950 to the Musikhochschule Stuttgart..
Hans Brehme was a well known pianist and accompanist. A highly diligent composer, he wrote music in many genres; the idiom of his compositions is fundamentally Classical, with a generous admixture of moderately modern harmonies. His compositions: mainly choral works and other vocal pieces, chamber music for various instrumentations. He wrote an opera, Der Uhrmacher von Straßburg (1941); operetta, Versiegelten Bürgermeister (1944); 2 symphonies; 2 piano concertos; Flute Concerto; Triptycon for Orchestra, on a theme by Handel (highly successful); Sextet for Flute, Clarinet, Horn, Violin, Viola, and Cello; Clarinet Quintet; Saxophone Sonata; several works for Accordion. |
