The Bach Cantatas Website celebrates its 14th anniversary

Aryeh Oron wrote (January 3, 2015):
The Bach Cantatas Website (BCW) was launched in its current form and address on December 30, 2000.

The BCW is located at: http://www.bach-cantatas.com
Description: The Bach Cantatas Website (BCW) is a comprehensive site covering all aspects of J.S. Bach's cantatas and his other vocal works and many of his instrumental works. The BCW contains for most works: detailed discographies, discussions, texts and translations, scores, commentaries, references, music examples... Performers of Bach’s works: their biographies, Bach discographies... Poets & composers associated with Bach: their biographies, Bach connection... Other resources: the Lutheran church year, chorale texts & melodies, books and movies on Bach, concerts, Bach festivals, guide to Bach tour... The BCW is an international collective project.

Some statistics: by the end of 2014, the BCW contains over 30,600 pages, 108,000 photos, 5,300 music files, and 3,400 PDF files.
The BCW is definitely the most popular site dedicated to J.S. Bach and his music and amongst the most popular sites dedicated to Classical Music in general.
The BCW has each day about 12-15,000 visits, from about 16-17,000 users, who see about 60,000-70,000 pages.
The BCW is rated very high in Google and other search engines, and there are over 390,000 links from other websites to the BCW (including, for example, over 8,500 links from Wikipedia and over 1,600 from YouTube)

There have been many improvements & additions to the BCW last year. See: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/New/Newsletter-2014.htm

As the creator of the BCW, not to me to testify for the value it has to the users. I know that it is extensively used by the academic community, by performers and by classical music fans around the world. The number of visits and the feedback I am getting continuously encourage me to continue, expanding, updating and improving the BCW. Many of the feedback messages from last year can be read at the page: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Topics/About-2014.htm

I would like to use this opportunity to thank the numerous contributors to the discussions in the Bach Mailing Lists and some other lists, whose messages are compiled into the pages of the BCW. Their names are mentioned accordingly above each quoted message. I would also like to thank the many Bach lovers around the world who have sent me material to be included in the BCW, such as articles, translation of cantata texts, recording details, biographies, photos, music examples, links to other sites, etc. Their names are mentioned accordingly in the relevant pages.

I continue to look forward to receiving your comments (corrections, suggestions, improvements, etc.) about the BCW. The instructions how to send me comments, appear in the following page:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/How.htm

I wish you all another Great and Happy Bach Year!

Bach Cantatas Website (BCW) Hosts Bach on a BudgScores

Gary Harney [Immanuel Bach Consort: www.immanuelbachconsort.org ] wrote via Aryeh Oron (January 17, 2015):
While it is widely accepted that the roughly 200 extant cantatas by Bach are among the greatest bodies of church music ever written, today choruses from them are performed in liturgical settings today far less often than motets by Byrd or masses by Palestrina. Why is this the case? There are many contributing factors, but high on the list is that few churches can afford the instrumentalists required to perform these works in their original form.

The Bach on a Budget series is a project of the Immanuel Bach Consort, which selects choruses that are within the technical abilities of capable (but not necessarily specialist) church choirs, that reflect theology consistent with today’s norms, and that are of suitable length for today’s church services, then reworks the accompaniment to be for either organ alone, or in some cases for organ and 1 or 2 obbligato instruments. These accompaniments are not orchestral transcriptions, but rather attempts to create serviceable accompaniments for organ which retain the essence of the orchestral score while being idiomatic and within the reach of capable players.

Bach on a Budget is delighted that the BCW has agreed to post their scores, which are available in pdf format free of charge. The first offerings are choruses suitable for General Use, including such accessible works as “Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt” (BWV 68), “Herr gib, daß ich dein Ehre” (BWV 107), and “Wir danken dir” (BWV 29). A series of choruses for Seasonal Use is in progress and will be available soon.

Recorded and filmed Bach Cantata Series by J.S. Bach-Stiftung St. Gallen

Aryeh Oron wrote (September 17, 2015):
The J.S. Bach-Stiftung St. Gallen (J.S. Bach Foundation of St Gallen) in Switzerland has embarked on a remarkable undertaking: over a period of some 25 years, the Foundation will perform the complete vocal works by J.S. Bach.
Each month, one of the over 200 Bach cantatas is performed in the idyllic town of Trogen in Appenzell, Switzerland. Only one cantata is performed per concert – but, for that, it is played twice. To present the work in its context, each cantata is performed according to its place in the church calendar. Between the two cantata performances, a notable speaker from the sphere of culture, economics or politics gives a reflection lecture on the cantata’s libretto and music. This lends a new perspective the second hearing of the work. In addition, there are complementary workshops.
With a rhythm of 12 cantatas per year, the project, which began in October 2006, is estimated to conclude in the year 2030.
The main aim of the J.S. Bach Foundation's ambitious project is to provide a living Bach experience for today's listeners and to deepen our understanding of the great composer's works. The artistic director of the foundation is Rudolf Lutz, who rehearses and conducts all performances with the choir, orchestra and solo vocalists. All concerts are performed on period instruments. The size of the vocal ensemble performing the choral movements ranges from 4 (OVPP) to 16.
All introductory workshops, concerts and reflection lectures are released on DVD. The cantatas are also released on CD. The texts of the lectures are published in a continually expanding Bach Anthology. So far 74 DVD's (74 Cantatas) and 14 CD's (42 Cantatas) have been released.
The discography pages on the BCW of this excellent recorded and filmed cantata series have recently been revised and updated. See:
DVD's 2006-2011: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Performers/Lutz-R.htm
DVD's 2012-2014: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Performers/Lutz-R-Rec2.htm
CD's: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Performers/Lutz-R-Rec5.htm
All the relevant cantata pages have also been updated accordingly. The entries in the cantata pages include both the DVD and CD releases and the concert programme notes. In many cases there are also watching options to selections from the filmed performances.

Fritz Lehmann Bach Cantata Discography

Aryeh Oron wrote (September 25, 2015):
Fritz Lehmann (1904-1956) was one of the pioneers in the world of recorded Bach Cantatas. In the early 1950's he recorded 10 cantatas with his choir Berliner Motettenchor and the Berliner Philharmoniker. Those recordings were first issued in Germany by Archiv Produktion, then in the UK by the sister label Archive Production. In the USA the recordings were published by American Decca in different couplings from the original German LP's.
Fritz Lehmann's career was cut short by his early death at the age of 51. He left us this small but important legacy of recorded Bach Cantatas. The recordings, which were done before the HIP era, are well conducted and performed.

13 years ago, I wrote in the BCML about Lehmann and another conductor from the same period, Hans Grischkat (1903-1977): "These two German recorded a substantial amount of Bach’s vocal music, however most of it has never been issued in CD form. Based on what I had the opportunity of hearing, I can say that their approach can be defined as romantic. That means using of big forces (choir and orchestra), expanded length and preference for legato lines rather than rhythmic approach. Although not in line with the modern approach of the HIP school, which prefers quicker tempi and dancing rhythm, I believe that the legacy of both conductors deserve re-issue in CD form. Not only as a respect and honour for conductors who were among the first to record the Bach Cantatas, but also in order to give us another angle to look at the cantatas. The modern interpretations have too many similarities, and sometimes I have the impression that the contemporary conductors try to imitate each other, or at least to follow the same route. We are in need of variety of approaches to enrich our listening. If we have a different one already recorded, why not making it available to the public? Furthermore, both conductors used first-rate vocal soloists, as the soprano Agnes Giebel (Grischkat) and the tenor Helmut Krebs (Lehmann). We have learnt from many cantata discussions that quite often singers from the past outclass many contemporary singers in terms of expression and vocal quality."

Only a few of the recordings have been issued in CD form over the years. However, in recent years most of them have become available for download by labels as Discover Classical Music and Classical Moments and most recently by BNF Collection (the latter in higher resolution than MP3).

The discography page of Fritz Lehmann on the BCW has recently been revised and updated. The page now presents all the known issues of his Bach Cantatas in LP, CD and Music Download formats. See: http://bach-cantatas.com/Performers/Lehmann.htm

All the relevant cantata pages have also been updated accordingly. The entries in the cantata pages present all the releases of the work in the same place.

Some of the recordings of individual movements present arrangements of Bach setting by Paul-Heinz Dittrich, Edison Densov, Magnus Lindberg, the Swingle Singers and others. The most famous use is in the final Adagio of Alban Berg's Violin Concerto ("To the memory of an angel"). Berg included two variations based upon the Bach chorale setting near the end of the Concerto. Berg's Concerto is not included in the discography of Cantata BWV 60. This masterpiece has over 100 recordings and needs a dedicated discography. I hope to find the time to do it some day.

BCW: Over 11,000 Musician Bios!

Aryeh Oron wrote (December 31, 2015):
The BCW contains short biographies of musicians, organised in two sections.

Performers of J.S. Bach's works: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Bio/index.htm
This section contains short biographies of every performer who has taken part in a recording of Bach's vocal works: mainly singers, conductors, chorus masters, choral and instrumental groups, as well as performers of Bach's solo keyboard and lute works. You can find in this section bios of many other instrumentalists, but at this stage the collection of their bios is far from being comprehensive.During 2015, I have added, among others, bios of many members of vocal ensembles, including:
Monteverdi Choir (Director J.E, Gardiner): http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Bio/Monteverdi-Choir.htm
Collegium Vocale Gent (Director: P. Herreweghe): http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Bio/Collegium-Vocale-Gent.htm
Bach Collegium Japan (Director: M. Suzuki): http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Bio/Bach-Collegium-Japan.htm

Dunedin Consort (Director: J. Butt): http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Bio/Dunedin-Consort.htm
The bio of each member includes a list of the albums/works in which he/she has taken part.

Poets & Composers associated with J.S. Bach: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Lib/index.htm
This section contains short biographies of Hymn-writers, Librettists, Composers of Chorale Melodies (CM), Composers who used CM used by Bach, Arrangers of Bach's works for piano and for orchestra, Members of Bach Family, Thomaskantors, Bach's Pupils, Composers whose works were performed by Bach; Composers whose works were attributed to Bach, etc.

The combined number of musician bios in both sections has just crossed the number 11,000. I believe this is one of the biggest collections of its kind on the web.

If you would like to contribute a musician biography/to the BCW or expand/correct existing bio, please send it to me in accordance with the guidelines at: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Bio/IndexBio-Exp.htm
