Description |
Gehren is a town in Ilm-Kreis in Thuringia. It is located about eight km east of Ilmenau in the Valley of Wohlrose between the Thuringian Forest in the southwest and Langem mountain in the southeast. Today Gehren is the seat of Verwaltungsgemeinschaft Langer Berg, belonging to the four other municipalities in the area. It is also the seat of the Landeswaldarbeiterschule Thüringens, where pupils are educated. |

History |
Gehren had been existed since the Middle Ages. From there, the southeastern part of today Ilm-Kreis around the villages of Langewiesen, Gehren und Großbreitenbach was managed at the time by Schwarzburger Oberherrschaf. The headquarters administration building was demolished in 1997. Toward the end of the 19th century began in Gehren industrialization and some larger factories, such as the sawmill at the train station that caused the location to develop into a town. |
