Created in 1977 by Philippe Herreweghe, La Chapelle Royale consists of about thirty young French singers and of an orchestra playing on Baroque instruments. Destiny quite naturally with the defense and the illustration of the vocal music of the Great Century, the increase in the number of singers, selected each time from the suitable vocal point of view, also makes it possible to approach the traditional, romantic and contemporary repertoires, in collaboration with various instrumental ensemblss.
La Chapelle Royale took part in significant musical performances, invited by the major festivals (Festival of Flandres, of Holland, of Saintes, Stuttgart, Ansbach, Wroclaw, Milan, Bologna, Turku, Luzern, Salzburg, Linz, Bratislava, Weeks of Sacred music of Cuenca, the Gulbenkian Foundation of Lisbon...)
It also took part in many productions of opera: with the TMP Châtelet (Iphigenie by Piccini), in Florence (les Indes Galantes de Rameau in 1983), at the Festival of Aix-en-Provence (Orfeo by Monteverdi in 1985), at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels (Dido and Aeneas by Purcell in 1992), and at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées (Armide by Lully in 1992).
Its recordings, include Motets by Rameau, Vespers by Monteverdi, the Mass in C by W.A. Mozart, the Requiem of Gabriel Fauré version 1893, Das Berliner Requiem by Kurt Weill, Medeamaterial by Pascal Dusapin... (discs published by Harmonia Mundi). La Chapelle Royale was also made known by its renditions of Cantatas, Motets, two Passions of J.S. Bach in collaboration with Collegium Vocale of Ghent.
It has already been directed by Gustav Leonhardt, Peter Phillips, Michel Corboz, John Eliot Gardiner, Roy Goodman, Sigiswald Kuijken, Bernard Haitink, John Adams...
Thanks to its ensembles, association La Chapelle Royale knew to create in France an authentic, original and recognized artistic dynamics covering five centuries of music.
