Founded by Itay Jedlin in 2006, Le Concert Étranger brings together a group of young musicians from a variety of origins such as Paris, Athens, Montreal, Havana, Tokyo and Jerusalem. Its members share a passionate commitment to faithful performance of the Baroque repertoire informed by their musicological and artistic research.
The group has performed at the Festival Sinfonia in Périgord, at the Cité de la Voix in Vézelay, and at the Marin Marais Festival in Paris. They have also been part of several seasons at the Parisian church of St. Germain des Prés, and at the Temple des Billettes.
In 2014 Le Concert Étranger presented projects at the Midsummer Festival in Hardelot, the Sablé Festival, and at the Ambronay Festival, where they performed J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245). In 2015, a new reconstruction of J.S. Bach's St. Mark Passion (BWV 247) was performed and filmed by the French national television in Ambronay.
The ensemble’s originality stems from its variable size, which extends from a quartet to a large group of performers including a full orchestra and choir. While its lushly varied continuo section gives an almost orchestral impression in chamber works, it can also create intimate, highly detailed atmospheres in the orchestral and vocal repertoires, and puts special emphasis on individual instrumental colours and textures.
Le Concert Étranger strives to place its performances in a coherent musical and cultural context, through an enlarged framework that explores, for instance, a liturgical event or historic instrument, or provides an illustration of the architecture or décor of a specific place. Some of its programs include drama, ballet, and poetry, and all its performances endeavour to set the music in its temporal and geographical contexts, surrounded by its sister arts. |
