Text for Cantata 182
Himmelskönig, sei willkommen

Original German Text

English Translation

1. SONATA

2. CHOR

Himmelskönig, sei willkommen,
laß auch uns dein Zion sein!
Komm herein,
du hast uns das Herz genommen.

King of Heaven be welcomed,
let us also be your Zion!
Come within,
you have taken hold of our hearts.

3. REZITATIV (Baß)

Siehe, ich komme,
im Buch ist von mir geschrieben:
deinen Willen, mein Gott, tu ich gerne.

Behold, I come,
in the scriptures it is written of me:
your will, my God, I gladly do.

4. ARIA (Baß)

Starkes Lieben,
das dich, großer Gottessohn,
von dem Thron deiner Herrlichkeit getrieben,
daß du dich zum Heil der Welt
als ein Opfer fürgestellt,
daß du dich mit Blut verschrieben.

It was intense love,
which compelled you, great Son of God,
to leave your throne of glory,
in order to position yourself
as sacrifice for the salvation of the world,
whereby you consigned yourself in blood.

5. ARIA (Alt)

Leget euch dem Heiland unter,
Herzen, die ihr christlich seid!
Tragt ein unbeflecktes Kleid
eures Glaubens ihm entgegen,
Leib und Leben und Vermögen
sei dem König itzt geweiht.

Lay yourselves down before the Savior,
you hearts, for you are Christian!
Present an unsoiled robe of your faith
at his approach,
body and life and fortunes
now be consecrated to the king.

6. ARIA (Tenor)

Jesu, laß durch Wohl und Weh
mich auch mit dir ziehen!
Schreit die Welt nur „Kreuzige!“
so laß mich nicht fliehen,
Herr, Herr, von deinem Kreuzpanier,
Kron und Palmen find ich hier.

Jesus, through well and woe
let me be drawn along beside you!
When the world only screams, "Crucify!"
prevent me from fleeing
Lord, Lord, from your cross’s banner,
crown and palms do I find here.

7. CHORAL

Jesu, deine Passion
ist mir lauter Freude,
deine Wunden, Kron und Hohn
meines Herzens Weide;
meine Seel auf Rosen geht,
wenn ich dran gedenke,
in dem Himmel eine Stätt,
uns deswegen schenke.

Jesus, your passion
is pure joy to me,
your wounds, crown [of thorns] and scorn
are a pasture for my heart;
my soul grazes upon roses
when I ponder all this,
a place in heaven
thus imparted to us.

8. CHOR

So lasset uns gehen in Salem der Freuden,
begleitet den König in Lieben und Leiden,
er gehet voran
und öffnet die Bahn.

So, let us enter [Jeru]salem in joy,
accompany the King through love and suffering,
he goes before us
and clears the way.
