|
Geist und Seele wird verwirret,
wenn sie dich, mein Gott, betracht'.
Denn die Wunder, so sie kennet
und das Volk mit Jauchzen nennet,
hat sie taub und stumm gemacht. |
Spirit and soul will be confounded
when they regard you, my God.
For the wonders, which they think they know
and which the people describe with glee,
have made them deaf and dumb. |

Ich wundre mich;
denn alles, was man sieht,
muß uns Verwundrung geben.
Betracht ich dich, du teurer Gottessohn,
so flieht vernunft und auch Verstand davon.
Du machst es eben, daß sonst
ein Wunderwerk vor dir was Schlechtes ist.
Du bist dem Namen, Tun und Amte
nach erst wunderreich,
dir ist kein Wunderding auf dieser Erde gleich.
Den Tauben gibst du das Gehör,
den Stummen ihre Sprache wieder,
ja, was noch mehr,
du öffnest auf ein Wort die blinden Augenlider.
Dies, dies sind Wunderwerke,
und ihre Stärke ist auch der Engel Chor
nicht mächtig auszusprechen. |
I am in awe;
for everything which we behold
can only cause astonishment.
When I regard you, you precious Son of God,
sense and sensibility take flight as well.
You make straight that which
without a miracle from you is crooked.
You are in name, deed and charge,
from the onset, full of wonders,
no wonder upon this earth compares to you.
To the deaf you grant hearing,
to the dumb you restore their speech,
yes, what’s more, with one word
you open the eyelids of the blind.
These, these are miraculous deeds,
and even the angelic choir is unable
to expound their power. |

Gott hat alles wohlgemacht.
Seine Liebe, seine Treu
wird uns alle Tage neu.
Wenn uns Angst und Kummer drücket,
hat er reichen Trost geschicket,
weil er täglich für uns wacht.

God has made all things well.
His love, his devotion
are renewed for us each day.
When fear and distress press upon us
he has conveyed abounding solace,
for he watches over us daily.

Ach, starker Gott, laß mich doch
dieses stets bedenken, so kann ich dich
vergnügt in meine Seele senken.
Laß mir dein süßes Hephata
das ganz verstockte Herz erweichen;
ach! lege nur den Gnadenfinger in die Ohren,
sonst bin ich gleich verloren.
Rühr auch das Zungenband
mit deiner starken Hand,
damit ich diese Wunderzeichen
in heilger Andacht preise
und mich als Erb und Kind erweise. |
Oh, mighty God, let me indeed
be ever mindful of this, that I can
readily immerse you in my soul.
Let your sweet “Ephphatha”*
temper my thoroughly stubborn heart;
ah! simply place a finger of mercy in my ears,
otherwise I am the same as doomed.
Stir as well the band of my tongue
with your mighty hand,
that I might praise these miraculous signs
in sacred devotion
and demonstrate myself as heir and child. |

Ich wünsche nur bei Gott zu leben,
ach! wäre doch die Zeit schon da,
ein fröhliches Halleluja
mit allen Engeln anzuheben.
Mein liebster Jesu, löse doch
das jammerreiche Schmerzensjoch
und laß mich bald in deinen Händen
mein martervolles Leben enden. |
I simply wish to live next to God,
oh! were that moment but already here
to raise a gladsome “Hallelujah”
among all the angels.
My dearest Jesus, do loosen
this misery-laden yoke of pain
and let me soon, within your hands,
conclude this torment-filled life of mine. |

*Ephphatha (Hephata) is an Aramaic word found in Mark 7:34, meaning: “be opened.” Jesus spoke this word when he healed a deaf and dumb man. |
